The history of washi tape

Washi tape, also known as masking tape, has its roots in traditional Japanese handicrafts. The term "washi" refers to the thinner and more durable paper made from plant fibres. The tape was first produced in Japan in the 1920s and was initially used as a tool for painters to draw straight lines and cover areas.

In the 1980s, washi tape began to gain popularity outside of Japan, particularly in the DIY and crafting community. Today, washi tape is a popular crafting material around the world, available in a variety of colours, patterns and widths.
