The history of the kantele

The kantele is a traditional Finnish plucked string instrument and is one of the oldest musical instruments in Finland. It is believed that the kantele was developed by the indigenous Finnish people as early as the first millennium BC.

Originally, the kantele was a shepherd's instrument and was made of animal skins and wood, but over the course of time the instruments have been further developed and refined.

Today there are different types of kantele, from small instruments with five strings to large concert kanteles with over 40 strings. The kantele is still played by many musicians and music lovers today and is considered an important part of Finnish culture.
