You are standing in front of a stream and want to cross to the other side. It seems silly, but the stream is just wide enough that you can't jump over it. Now you could take off your shoes and socks and wade through - it's cold and very dangerous if the current is strong.
You also don't know how deep the stream really is. You walk up and down the stream and look for a bridge or materials to build a bridge.
