Habitat & Facts

There are currently three known species: the African bush elephant, the African forest elephant and the Asian elephant.African elephants have larger ears, while Asian elephants have smaller ears.The characteristics of all elephants include a long trunk, tusks, large ear flaps, massive legs and tough but sensitive skin.The trunk is used for breathing, transporting food and water to the mouth and grasping objects.Elephants are herbivores.They eat a variety of different plants and plant parts.Their diet depends heavily on where they live, what is available and what time of year it is.Common foods include grasses, palms, pulses, flowers, fruits, roots, bamboo and much more.Some feed on agricultural crops such as sugar cane.They live z.B.in savannahs, grasslands, rainforests, scrub forests, deciduous forests.
